Timber Treatments

Timber materials must comply with one of the following applicable standards or classifications.

British Standard

Timber used in stand construction or displays that is less than 25mm thick must be impregnated to achieve Class 1, in accordance with BS 476 Part 7.

MDF is exempt from this requirement and is permitted for use due to its density.

Note: Treated boards will be marked BS 476 Part 7, Class 1.

Spanish M Classification

Laminated wood more than 18mm thick, or non-laminated wood between 5mm and 18mm thick, must be labelled or certified as Class M3.

Non-laminated wood more than 18mm thick should be assumed to comply with Class M3 without supporting documentary evidence.

Wood-based composite materials or plywood less than 5mm thick must achieve Class M1, supported by test reports.

Alternatively, these materials may be impregnated to achieve Class M2, using suitable fireproofing substances applied by an approved method. Certificates must be provided and must include:

  • the name of the product;
  • a description; and
  • the date of the approved application.

European Standard

Under BS EN 13501, the following classifications apply:

  • for M1, read Class A1, A2 or B;
  • for M2, read Class A1, A2, B or C; and
  • for M3, read Class A1, A2, B, C or D.

Documentary evidence is required and should be submitted with the stand plans.
