- Ladders must be of Industrial-strength/rating only
- Ladders over 4m are not permitted
- Steps & ladders should be checked for suitability and defects each time they are used and defective ladders removed immediately
- Leaning ladders must be placed at the correct angle
- Ladders should only be used on level ground and must be secure, e.g. suitably tied or, as a last resort, footed
- Only one person/user should clime or work from a ladder at a time
- The top treads of steps must never be used as a platform for work (no standing on top tread)
- No sideways loading, two-person supervision (one holds, one climbs)

Working At Height
WORKING AT HEIGHT
PPE
Anyone working above 1.8m must wear a full-body harness with double lanyard and a hard hat; cherry-picker or MEWP operators must also wear head protection.
Planning
Complete a suitable Risk Assessment and Method Statement (RAMS) before starting. Eliminate or minimise the need to work at height wherever possible.
Safe Access
Fit permanent or temporary stairs and guardrails early; ladders are for access only, not for working platforms.
Safety Zone
ensure that a safety zone is created around the stand to protect passers by against materials accidentally falling off the stand.
Ladder Rules:
Scaffolding
- Use only certified and tagged scaffolds approved by a Scaffold Supervisor.
- Must be operated by certified personnel only.
- Scaffolds must have top and mid guardrails; never use incomplete structures
- A valid inspection certificate is required before use.
MEWPs
- Must be operated by certified personnel only.
- A valid inspection certificate is required before use.
- There must be a braking system on each of the legs of the mobile platform.
- Transport will be done horizontally close to the base and never while there is someone on the platform
- Fall protection must be used while operating MEWPs.
Crane and Lifting Operations
- All lifting gear, including chains, cables, slings, and hooks, must be inspected before each use to confirm they are free from defects and suitable for the intended load. Lifting should only commence once the area is clear of personnel.
- Loads must never be left suspended or moved by swinging, and when lowering, both ends must be placed evenly to maintain balance and avoid instability.
- Lifting equipment must be inspected daily by a competent person and clearly marked with its Working Load Limit (WLL). All inspections must be documented by the lifting supervisor. Equipment must be positioned securely and safely to handle the load without risk to personnel or property.
